hi, i wanted to know if there is a difference between a hhd with 8mb and 2mb buffer ? i am considering either WD 80/120 gb ata133 2mb/8mb or maxtor 80/120 gb ata133 2mb/8mb
which is better does the 2mb/8mb has any effect on the performance ?

Yes the 8MB cache makes a difference. The Western Digital ones are very good. The 2MB cache versions carry a 1 year warranty and the 8MB ones carry a 3 year warranty.

WD drives are ATA/100, Maxtor's are ATA/133, but to be honest I don't think it makes that much difference. I's go with the WD personally.

The 8mb cache offers a minor performance increase transfering smaller files.

If you're consider between the WD or Maxtror, I'd go with WD. It has a 3 year warrenty and Maxtor only has one. I bought one of Maxtor's 8mb drives Retail version, and it failed in two weeks. I have RMA it and still waiting for it to come.

WD. cant fault it so far. And 3 years is a decent warantee. 1 goes by very quick.
