so my computer is f-ing up pretty bad, so if this message gets post
more than once... my apologies..
Remeber the days when you could pick up a MK012 for 99$ new at your
local GC.. i was floored when i saw that i couldnt find a matched pair
for anything less than 345$ new... I have a budget of 200-225$ for
mic(s) for mainly steel string acoustic guitar. Does anyone know where
to find a used matched pair of mk012's around that pricerange? or
possibly a good price for just one used... or does anyone have any
other recomandations for mic(s) on acoustic guitar around that budget?
any response would be a great help.

If you can up your budget another 50 bucks or so buy a couple of Crown
CM700's. There are 6 of them on ebay right now ending in about 9 hours.
There is also a pair on ebay that are sitting at $150. Here are the
links. Good luck.

Okay, GC is the only authorized US vendor for the Oktava mikes. A&S McKay
imports them and sells them exclusively to GC.
GC does not match them. GC does not select them. My suspicion, though I
cannot prove it, is that GC is getting the culls that McKay can't sell in
the UK. But GC does often run sales, and you can still get them pretty
cheaply through them or Musician's Friend (which they own).
There are some grey market dealers like the Sound Room which buy direct
from Russia and get better quality production, and which usually provide
some quality control and matching on top of that.
For an acoustic guitar, you don't need the mikes to be matched, and to be
honest you may only need one mike. I think you'd be better off with one
selected 012 from the Sound Room than with two from GC. But then, you
also might want to look at the EV N/D 468, which is a dynamic but one
without a presence peak and with some decent top end. And you might like
the Crown CM-700 also.

Ain't success wonderful? When there were no other similar mics for
$99, the Russian mic was the hot item. Now that there are a dozen or
more functionally similar (and probably more consistently built)
Chinese mics that have lower landed cost, the Russian mics are no
longer a good loss leader.

Actually the GC's in this area stopped carrying the 012's entirely, probably
because of all of the returns. They also implemented a "no returns" policy
on mics about this same time.

I recently bought a pair of Mk-012-01's on Ebay. It was a "Buy it Now"
auction that I believe I was one of the first people to see, as I was
obsessed with Ebay for a little while. The guy must not have known
what he had because I got the pair for $125. They had some small dents
I found later, but sound pretty good. If you watch Ebay religously for
about a month or so, you may be able to find something similar. Wow, I
really sound like a loser.

Hey let's just say you were a smart shopper... I've often haunted ebay
looking forgreat deals, and have occasionally found them. Bought a
Beyer M-160 in great shape for $225 one time. My favorite thing is
searching for alternate spellings...

I've been shopping at GC's around the country since ~97 - and I never saw
this policy until 2002 (not saying your store didn't have it, just that it
wasn't common). I've never run across this policy in any other music store.

well.. i appreciate the input... it seems the more research i try to
do,the more options i run into, and the bigger the head-ache i am
ending up with.. but perhaps that is due to the lack of sleep and
increase caffiene in my system (whose to say?)
due to my fiscal squeeze i think i might just go with a new pair of
603's... you think that is a better buy then one c4 or one 3031 for
guitar? if im lucky perhaps i can find a used c4 or 4041, i saw that
they were going for 200$ at some site, but sold out now...
does tracking with two mics make that much of a difference? i have
always copied one track and added dely and some pan to get that stereo
sound... so this is slightly new water im treading..

I'm not a big fan of GC or Spam Ash, BUT it all comes down to the folks you
know, and who know you. I would always go to this store on 48th St. in
NYC. I bought my first & second guitar there,
a Framus Acc. and a Gretch Anniversary, you know that one by it's color,
which I still call, "mucous green". Anyway, the store was sold to Spam Ash,
and one of the guys I knew went to work at GC.
He sold me some small ticket items last week, for exactly the price I had in
my head, which happened to be his cost.
Can't beat that!
I did buy an MC-12-01 at GC when they first came out, and it's kinda grainy,
IMHO. I bought 2 of them, and wanted to return one.
They didn't have a store policy posted at that time,
but they told me it was against NJ state law to take back the mic.
This was a boldface lie! I asked them, if that's true, show me the law. They
took back the mic and refunded my money.
It was the last time I bought anything from them!

Health department regulations don't mean anything. When the manager
says "no returns on microphones" they don't need no stinkin'
regulations other than those that their management has made.
Apparently it's a store thing. They're allowed to set their own
policies. After all, these days, if someone buys a microphone and gets
AIDS, they'll probably add the store that sold the microphone to the
list of sue-ees.

Be careful doing that. You can get some really weird comb filtering
problems when you sum those tracks to mono. Check your mix in mono
before you commit to ANY artificial stereo effect.
