Hi:
I am using mmplayer on my treo 600 to play avi files. I create the
avi's using dvdrip (http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/)on a linux box and I
haven't quite found the ideal settings. I reduce the audio to 24k and
the video resolution to 160x88 (it is wide aspect). My test files are
tv episodes about 45 minutes long. I convert these to 80 meg avi's (68
meg video, 12 meg audio). Underneath dvdrip is transcode. I'm not
doing any deinterlacing or interpolation on the avi's.
I can't seem to find the right combination of settings to get skip
free, synchronized avi's. They play pretty well, but I hit a bump
every 90 secs or so.
I've greatly increased the buffers in mmplayer, but that doesn't seem
to have helped.
I also can't use the position slider in mmplayer to change position in
the avi. I tried running the generated avi's thru DivFix to rebuild
the index and it found no errors. These avi's play great in mplayer
under linux and in WMP under windows.
Is anyone out there using linux to create the avi's for their treo. I
haven't tried mencoder yet. That may be another possibility.

I don't know what processor you got in the 600.
On my 400mhz x-scale palm T3, the settings I use (windows - virtual dub)
are:
divix (5.11)
Video 250 kbs
Audio 16kbs, 11025 khz, mpeg3, mono
15 Frames per second.
size 416 x 312
You are best to "decimate" the frame rate to half of what the souce is (to
keep audio sync). If you change the frame rate to some weird number, then
sync problems will occur (virtual dub has a decimate option where every
other frame is skipped).
Now, the above is for a high performance unit, and the screen size of course
is large. I am not sure if your unit is 160 x 160, or 320 x 320.
So, the above settings with 160 x 88 should work just fine on your treo.
Once you get the above working, then you can start pushing up the sound,a nd
perhaps even consider stereo..but that is not needed most of the time.

I don't think the palm cares if yuo used Apple, Windows, or Linux. But, you
do what to get the frame rate, and bandwidth rates down to some fairly small
levels to work well on the palm.
