m-audio firewire solo w/ dp setup

my input sound is recognized in the m-audio system preferences but i
can't get a signal in dp, when i select the m-audio as the hardware
driver i can't select 'built-in' as the output and, conversly, when i
select select 'built-in' as the hardware driver i can't select the
m-audio device as the input.

can anyone advise me what i have forgotten to do or need to do with a
G3 white ibook, dp 4, m-audio solo firewire?
