Latency issue with EMU 0404 and Cubase sx

I record one audio guitar track through a mixing desk then look to
record another afterwards and the tracks are completely out of time.

I thought for a while I was going mad and my timing was completely off
but I am getting severe latency and was wondering the best ideas to
get rid of this?

I am using asio drivers.

This is the nature of build-it-yourself digital recorders. You can
reduce it but you can never make it go away. It's not your
grandfather's Ampex any more.
