Giving up employer phone and want to try VM prepaid to asses actual needs
for a couple months. If you call a phone and nobody answers and you hang up
before a voice-mail or answering machine, does it count as a minute?

It shouldn't, but the real answer is to call VM customer service. Sprint
does not do billing for VM phones; VM does.
