Another survey on Cell phones, driving & accident frequency

As an agent, I subscribe to a daily report issued & emailed to yours truly
on news on the insurance industry.

Thought this might be of interest to those folks who insist on driving and
talking on their cell phone at the same time

If this thread is 'off-topic' ...then let it die....
But my thoughts on it are this....
Someone has 'latched' on to this theory and is studying it to death! They
WILL come up with the data they need!

Some things to think about !
- Where is/was this research on smokers? Lighting up is usually a mutil-hand
effort.....
- Same for eating in the car....
- Ever see people with DVD players in the front seat?
- Ever watch women/men do grooming in the mirror?
- What concerns me most is the caring for children in seats/car seats..
Reaching back to them... getting them things . discipline, etc. etc .
- Just this past weekend, I was a passenger and observed I driver in another
lane reading his 'Mapquest' map, which he was holding with his thumb to
steering wheel.

The problem is 'loss of attention' and it can occur and has occurred in many
flavors over the years. Because the cell phone is a common object, it is
VERY easy to study and zero in on!

Cell phone distraction is just a symptom of a bigger problem.... driving
distracted...

Absolutely true. In saying that, this is a new study. I for one have been
involved in three accidents in the past ten years that involved cell phones.
The one 10 years ago was my fault. Fortunately, it wasn't too bad for either
party. In the past two years, those two other accidents, which wasn't my
fault) where the other parties were yakking away on a cell phone.

The point is as you said ... driving distraction, and IMHO, and cell phone
use is on top of all those other circumstances listed above.

Well-respected within certain circles, yes. I wouldn't call them
objective, though.

I think the real question is why is the insurance industry as vocal as
they are about cellphone use when other distractions have been around
for much longer? And why, when a study is published showing that
cellphone use does not contribute more than its share of accidents,
does the insurance industry either ignore it or flat out dismiss it? I
just think it's obvious there's an agenda there, but this isn't the
group to discuss it. I only wanted to answer your question.
