I dont have much experience with different setups and burners, so I thought I'd ask here.

I'm using a Lite-On 52246S in my rig. Recently I've been trying to encode a bunch of my mpeg/avi files to the VCD format so they can be played in a normal DVD player. The process is working fine, but it's taking an hour or longer just to encode the files to the VCD format. My question is, is this considered normal? I'm using Nero to do the encoding and burning. Is there other software that might speed it up?

Any insight is appreciated.

My rig:
Antec 1080AMG w/ 430W TruePower
P4 2.8ghz
Asus P4PE
512mb PC2700 DDR333 Samsung
GeForce 3 Ti500
Creative Audigy2 Platinum
Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache
Samsung 52x CDROM
Lite-On 52246S

Yes thats fairly normal, I use two HDD's and 1 GB of ram which speeds things up a bit.
Some programs are slightly faster than others, check out this site for some other <A HREF="http://www.dvdrhelp.com/guides?tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=AVI+to+VCD&osselect=&howtoselect=;&search=Search" target="_new">programs</A> that may be more suited to your needs.

You can use TMPGEnc. This program is fast

Don't use nero to encode mpeg files. It gives poor picture quality. And like Spitfire said, you can use TMPGEnc which is a good conversion program. But don't expect it to do the job fast. All software encoding solutions share the same problem that they take a long time to encode files. If this is an issue to you, then you should consider hardware encoding solutions instead.

Yep. Thats normal.
Even on my Overclocked 1833Mhz beasty it takes over an hour for a decent movie... I dont think the mpeg encoding is too streamlined, somewhat slow.

And i too use TMPEG... proly the easiest/best to use for VCD.
