Hi All

Found a chassis lying in the road a while back and my tech says all looks
good. Only problem...no tubes.

Locals want $250 CDN for the set and I'm not prepared to fork out that kind
of cash on speculation (unless it get's Doug working on drivers or ID
coughing up the soon to be released 3.0 bug fixed).

So I need to find some cheap tubes for this puppy to see if it works.

Ebay is a source I'm looking into as well as a few other friends in the
business but if anyone knows of a better source or has them lying around and
would like to sell me or "rent" me them for testing purposes that would be
excellent.

here's what I need

6 - 6L6 C6
1 - 12AX7A
1 - 12AT7
1 - 6C10
1 - 6CX8
1 - 7025

Thanks

Don

Consider Triode Electronics in Chicago. They have a wide range of decent
tubes.

Realize that there are a lot of "6L6" tubes out there that don't even come
close to meeting the original 6L6 specifications, too. Ned at Triode will
at least steer you away from those.

The 6C10 and 6CX8 are going to be inexpensive if you can find them...
compactrons are not exactly valuable tubes these days. The 12AX7 and
12AT7 are available in decent current production for cheap.

Try this guy too... all good stuff: www.eurotubes.com -- despite the
name, he's in the states, the tubes are made in Europe. The 6C10 and
6CX8 you can probably find super cheap on ebay.

Hi Ya'll,
I would suggest bringing it to a "Tube" tech who should have the
tubes to test the chassis, set the proper bias and probably replace
some capacitors. Check out the reviews at harmony central dot com and
I believe you'll find it worthwhile. I completly re- tubed my twin
with electro harmonix 6L6s and Groove tubes and nos fender branded for
about everthing else and it cost about 185 dollars at Muscians Friend
and another local music store. Sounds like a Million Bucks! If you
decide you don't want to mess with it or end up with tubes you can't
use you may contact me at Jeff Dot Colon at gmail dot com. I got so
much tube stuff laying around I could always use more. whatever you do,
don't power it without tubes or a load connected to the
output.......good luck J.

Why do people feel that they have to own everything, even if they're
not sure they need it? Take it to a shop that services amplifiers, pay
the minimum service fee (probably $50 or so) and ask them to check it
out for you. They'll put tubes in it, see if it works, and if it
doesn't, give you an estimate for repairs, including a set of tubes.
Then you'll know if it just fell out of the back of the pickup truck
(and someone's desperately looking for it) or the real reason why it
was lying on the side of the road.

I'm not sure what you mean or why this is even part of your answer but to
clarify things I can use this amp

That is part and parcel of the gameplan with this chassis, I'm just looking
at various options before taking it in to a "real shop".

The Police were notified and given the serial # as well as the more
reputable used instrument dealers in the area not to mention putting the
word out in the community it's now been two years so it's become finders
keepers

Thanks for the advice

There's a guy in Colorado we have known as Lord Valve. He posts in these groups from time to time,
too. Ping Lord Valve, do a google. He has amazing deals for good prices and does bullet proof
testing of everything to be sure you're getting quality.

Yes, but if you have to buy the tubes and do extensive repairs, it may
not be worth it. What I meant was that you don't have to buy the
tubes to determine the condition of the amp, and that's the first
thing you have to do.

This is related to the tendency to buy a bunch of recording gear
(without having a good studio space and without knowing beans about
the technology) rather than going to a studio to make a recording.
It's always something along the lines of "I'm not good enough to pay
for a studio so I'll just buy the equipment and learn as I go along."
But that doesn't have anything to do with this amplifier.

> it's now been two years so it's become finders keepers

Oh. I guess that if I had something like that for two years, I'd have
been more curious than you as to whether it was in working condition.
Whatever.

I had one of these amps 15 years ago, which I reloaded with Groove Tubes
(old Sylvania stock). It was the loudest and cleanest 2x12 I've ever heard,
but I never got anything even close to a good overdrive sound out of it.
Wish I still had it now, along with my Les Paul.

Let me guess - "EH's are made in Russia, so they must actually be made by
Sovtek"

Well, neither EH nor Sovtek actually manufacture tubes.
EH and Sovtek are both brand names owned by the same importer, New
Sensor. If you buy an EH or a Sovtek tube, they could have been
manufactured by Reflector, Ulyanov, or a dozen other Russian companies.

You'd be hard put to find tubes made in any but old soviet block countries
or China anyway, as far as relatively inexpensive ones. For one thing, most
"more modern" countries have environmental concerns with the production of
tubes.

These guys seem to have some reasonable prices
http://www.bws-tube.com/htm/tubes.html
considering they are selling NOS US made 6L6s for somewhere between $45 and
$65.

But I'd agree with Mike. It's far easier to take the unit to a reputable
repair service and pay the estimate price to see whether it's worth getting
fixed or not.

When one thinks about the price of either a vintage or even a new Super,
it's worth almost any price since the item was originally free anyway. But
I'd be tempted to put Yellowjackets in it! <g>

To be honest, I think the Sovtek 5881WXGT beats any of the NOS 6L6 devices
hands down. It might not be such a good choice on a guitar amp because it
is nearly impossible to overload the thing. But there has honestly been a
lot of engineering going on in the tube world in the past thirty years since
US manufacturers started giving up on tubes, and some of the new production
stuff is pretty impressive.

Should have just used two of the 6L6s and you'd have had some pretty nice
overdrive. I have an old Traynor Mark 3 with either 6550s or EL-34s (can't
remember which but they are GT) and it's really LOUD but way too clean.
Yanked two tubes out and it sounds beautiful (through a dual showman 2-15"
cabinet). Same with my Peavey Classic 50 and I'm running it at 22 watts
through my Ampeg V4 cab. Makes the 335 sing and the strat talk.

Mike Matthews was the owner and designer of Electro-Harmonix. He
retired for a while, then started Sovtek.
