Printer won\'t print in colour

Yesterday, I installed a black, cyan and yellow ink cartridge. I had to run about a dozen pages through the printer to get it working right. This morning, I installed a magenta ink cartridge. After 10-12 more pages wasting ink, I still do not have the color orange, red or purple. I have installed and reinstalled several times. Why won't it print color right? Now, it's telling me my black cartridge is low. WHAT?
