if at all is there any difference between the 80g ata133 8mb cache maxtor and the 80g ata100 8mb cache WD? i want to know which is quieter... the quieter the system the better... also does that extra 33 make a difference? or is it just a marketing strategy.....? also which performs better? (if there is a big difference, i guess they r about the same)

thx

Yup, they're about the same in performance. The ATA133, invented by Maxtor, is just a maketing catchword. You see, ATA133 "sounds" faster than ATA100, and that's what Maxtor wants you to believe. Too bad Intel didn't use term SATA150 on its serial ATA standard which would have made Maxtor's ATA133 look inferior. :)

I thought Maxtor claimed to have an 80Gb platter density. Having said that Maxtor no longer supply technical details about platters and heads in their latest drives. This seems to be due to them turning out 80Gb DM9s with a variety of different platter sizes, initially at least. But in theory at least, the latest 80Gb HD from Maxtor should contain a single platter of 80Gb that will perform better than that from WD will contain 2.
