I have just "inherited" the above laptop and when I got it it had this weird problem. When booting and in "Setup", the display is corrupting. In the splash screen this corruption takes the form of ranks of small white lines and dots all over screen but in the Setup screen (or any boot screens where you see white low res writing on black background) signifcant numbers of characters are in the incorrect character set (mainly Graphic/Wingding characters.) The corruption exists whether the boot & Setup screens are in "Stretch" or not. Its almost impossible to see what the settings are on the set-up screen.
However, if I let the laptop continue and boot into XP, the display works fine, really clear and no-dead pixels or corruption.
I have tried re-flashing with the latest BIOS (windows method), I have F-Disked, then formatted, then re-installed XP and applied SP2, then all the drivers; However the problem remains.
