As most of you can tell, I'm pretty new here, but I've been using THG extensively for researching hardware I wish to buy. I trust these unbiased reviews above most others and always seem to learn something new after reading them. That's why I'm asking for help here. My 17" Mag CRT recently died on me. I had been considering the idea of getting an LCD to replace it, but didn't know much about them. Upon digging into the subject, I learned just how bad they can be for games, especially fast-pasced FPS games.
Thanks to some of the reviews on THG, I have been able to narrow it down to a few products and was hoping to hear some opinions about them. I really like what I've heard about the Hydis panels, but all of the monitors that have been reviewed with them within the last year have vanished from the market. The only one I can still find is the Acer AL1731, but I can't seem to find any reviews of it. This is the monitor I'm considering the most due to the Hydis panel, but is it a good monitor? Has anyone used one extensively or been able to compare it to some other monitors?
Other than that, I've ben considering a Samsung SyncMaster 172X as I've heard good things about it from several other sources as well. But if the Hydis panel is better (and is true 24-bit color), I'd much rather go with that. It's too bad the 10ms Hydis panels aren't really out yet (as far as I can tell), since they'd probably be the best.
Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
EDIT:
Well I did find a review of the AL1731M here:

I believe this is the 14ms (as opposed to the 20ms listed) Hydis panel mentioned in one of the THG reviews. The main problem is that it has a very low contrast of around 210 as opposed to the 430 listed. Thus I'm still researching the Samsung SyncMaster 172X and now the Acer AL1721 which is using a 16ms Hydis panel with 420 contrast.
Any information that anyone could give me about these monitors would be much appreciated. I'd also be interested if there was any new information about the 10ms Hydis panel. Thanks again.
Edited by MechaBouncer on 08/03/04 01:50 PM.
