I noticed today that my Rode NTK is exhibiting a strange crackling
(not your normal audio glitching). It kinda sounds like a bowl of rice
krispies (if you know what I mean). I think it's just suddenly got
worse (I did notice it around 6 months ago, but it then dissapeared) -
it's now come back with avengance, and other than the microphone being
buggered, does anyone have an ideas what it might be? It's probably
been used a total of 30-40 times. I've tried leads, amps etc.

Here's a recording of the noise (this is a recording of my studio
'silence' - I then normalised it, so it isn't actually this loud).

Any ideas appreciated

Hi Owen,

The link to your MP3 doesn't seem to work. I went to the root of your
website just to see if it was mistyped but I didn't see it there either.

I hope you don't mind but while I was there I listened to the three MP3's
that are there of your music. I really enjoyed all three pieces! Especially
the guitar playing and writing/arrangements. Cool stuff!

LOL! Thanks for the feedback, I forgot I'd left the stuff uploaded...I
should really take them down, as I've not copyrighted them yet!

I don't think my FTP program uploaded the file for some reason, I've
done it again and it works. Sorry about that. By the way, could the
problem be the valve? How often do they need replacing? If at all?

Cheers

Owen

Arcing: sound is 'frying', not steady, which might eliminate motors,
SCR devices.

1) very poor connection (wire, fuze clip, switch contact),
2) Dirty insulator on the power pole or transformer high voltage side.

A walkabout with a cheap AM radio (tuned between stations) might help
to pinpoint the source.

I just listened to the sample.

This is a guess but it sounds like either moisture/contaminants on a
connection or circuit board, a bad solder joint or a transistor or other
component going bad. I don't work with tubes enough to know but it could be
the tube going bad I guess.

I assume you've played witht he ground-lift switch on teh back of the PSU ?

Or could be a dry joint in the mic/psu, cable, or preamp. Or a dirty
contact. Or a faulty component.

It's most likely the bi-polar transistor beside the tube. This has happened
to mine in the past..Easy fix..

Cheers for the replies. Could you please elaborate more on your last
post? Is the tube inside the mic or the PSU?

The tube should be inside the mic ( it is on my NTV )

Well, I've done some more tests and I don't think it's a bad contact. I
left it for two weeks without touching the microphone and tried it
again yesterday with a combination of leads. At first it seemed the
problem had dissapeared, but just to be sure I left it on for a few
hours. Needless to so I came back later on and it had started
re-appearing - albeit not as bad as previously. Could this be moisture?

Hi Owen.

Probably not moisture but I suppose it possible. If it was moisture I'd
think that the problem would be at it's worst when it's cold and then get
better as it warmed up ( because the moisture will evaporate ). Sounds more
like a thermally defective component ( like a transistor etc as Jack
mentioned ).

Have you talked to Rode tech support? What did they say about it?

Best of luck!
