I am having a continuous problem with files being lost on/cd-rw's. I have been told that you can't fill the cd due to overwriting of critical files. I use roxio 5 software and a sony cd-rw. I had just enabled XP shutdown proceedures which work in concert with my APC back-UPS and noticed the hard drive started going...and going...and going for about 10 to 15 minutes. The machine wasn't locked up but I thought I better restart the system. My cd-rw was only about 1/2 full and now I've lost a bunch of stuff and couldn't even read from it until I rebooted and now roxio doesn't see it. It's using I think the XP interface which gives no usability to the device. I'm always having problems with this media in regards to saving files. Do you know of any methods or whatever to enable me to use this as a viable storage device. Any help is greatly appreciated. Mike

Scotty: Thanks for the info. I downloaded it and will indeed give it a try. I have to ask though, is there something I'm missing on this RW issue. I'm starting to think there's something I 'm not doing or doing wrong. Do I need to close the cd each and every time I use it. Roxio states there is an image file I'm supposing you can use for restoring but says nothing as to what to do or how to do it.

You will find Nero easy enough to use and since it has been so long since I used poxio CD I can't remember how bad it was ..lol.
No you don't have to close off a multisession CD in manual mode but if you use the wizard I am fairly sure it closes of the CD-r.
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve or produce to a CD-r?

A few good guides to successful authoring/burning can be found here;

Well I can't say I don't have some good resources to look into. Thanks. I'm hoping to find the answers to these mysterious problems that seem to plague this media. Thanks again. Mike

What media CD-r's are you using btw?

Some brands of media work better than others with different burners and programs.

Scott: I should also mention that though I can't read this CD on my unit, my wifes mach.can and roxio shows the data amount but its scandisk feature can't fix it. There's info on this volume but nothing can seem to pull it out. I wonder if spinrite could fix this???

4x media! are you sure its 4x?
You are right, there is nothing wrong with the Imation brand, btw whats the speed of your CD writer?

Perhaps you're attempting to write at speeds exceeding the media write speeds or you are writing from your HDD to the CD writer which is placed on the same channel (ribbon). Another thing to try, re-install the drivers for this device, check its position on the IDE channel, swap out or test the ribbon cable, and ensure it is jumpered correctly.
Personally I place my CD writer as secondary master if I have only 1 HDD and 1 CD-RW so they are on separate channels/cables and this should eliminate data loss or corruption.
