I know there was another post about this, but I have more detail, for one, I know its the HD, this grinding sound only happens when windows is loading, it doesn't happen at boot, but the weird thing is that the grinding sound stops after 4-5 minutes.. then it seems to be working fine.

I have a 40GB harddrive and around 37 of that is full, could that be the problem? it just started 2 days ago, I haven't formatted in around 2 years :))), I backed up some things and I will format soon.

oh and 1 more question: when I rar files on my PC, they work, but only on my PC, they don't work on other computers, also when I burn executable files, I get an I/O error, can this be the HDD?

When you bought the HDD did it come with a diagnostic utility?? It checks for errors and stuff on your HDD. I did that after like a year after it crapped out, and I was able to RMA it with WD.

do it quickly though, cause your warrenty period might already be over or close... What brand is it?

I had a HDD do that once, I would be removing your data and sending it back ASAP!
Basically it made the noise when it was cold, once it was warm it was ok but after one month it started thrashing around and stopped dead.
