Posted this in Palm forum, becuase been an OS5 user since my first PDA (my only), and TX is my primary choice.
Anyways, I brought a Zire 31 about a year and a half ago, when they first came out, and it has been great, doing everything I ask it too, stable, fast. The only major complaint I have is the screen. 160x160. While this is fine for most uses, for editing spreadsheats, writing or watching videos, it is next to useless, especially for watching videos.
Anyways, and my faithful 31 s a bit worse for wear now - crashes are becoming more frequent, battery life is on the decline - it no longer charges via the charger, i have to slow charge it via the USB cable. Time to replace, in short.
I want a model with WiFi, becuase then I am not tied to my desktop if I just want to get on MSN or do some emailing/writing.
I've been looking at the new TX, however the Palm OS is getting on in years, and I was thinking about a WIndows Mobile 5.0 device. However, Windows Mobile devices are all either 240x320 or 640x480. While a full VGA screen would be nice, the models so equipped are out of my price range, so if i was to switch to windows mobile, it would have to be a 240x320 device. The TX is 320x480. Would the WIndows Mobile screen be adequate for what I want to do, or am I better off with a TX?
P.S
Posted this on Brighthand.com first, got no replies and nine views in about a week, hoping for a better response here.
i dont remember seeing your post on bh. which forum was it in? if it was in the tx forum, you would get several dozen replies in less than a day.
anyway, the tx is way better than win mobile devices right now based on price, ease of use, battery life, and stability.
however, there are some cons. the tx has no microphone. the tx has no status led. palmos is like dos, it doesn't keep one app from affecting another app but it is a widely held belief that palmos 5 is far more stable than windows mobile. even with axim x51v's running around $325 with discounts, they have less usable memory for the user and the vga screen hurts battery life. tx's are a better deal at $299, but can be found for around $230 with discounts. if you are used to palmos, you would find windows mobile a difficult adjustment. some have been successful with that adjustment and now like windows mobile, but many more have come back home to palm.
there are separate logins for the general forums and most people do not bother logging out of the palm section to go check the other sections. i used to check both areas back when i briefly owned an ipaq, but after i returned it i stopped checking the pocket pc sections. i had email notification turned on and haven't gotten replies to some of my posts there after the first few weeks. i suggest you create a login in the palm section and post there. there are a number of pocket pc owners who frequent the palm forums at brighthand.
for example. if this post were in the palm section of brighthand rather than toms hardware or the pocket pc section of brighthand, mine would have been one of over a half dozen responses by now.
