I am currently looking for a high quality computer monitor that can satisfy multiple needs. Topping the priority list is a very large desktop space for my work. I also want to be able to play games on it, possibly FPS ones, although I generally like RPGs or strategy games. I also want it to double as a TV, if possible. Are there any monitors out there that can satisfy all these needs?

Why don't you read the reviews? The most recent ones should give you a good guide to the panels used by the manufacturers.

I guess if you are after lots of desk space crt's are out of the question. Go for a very low ms lcd screen, a 17" would be best. High ms will make games (especially fps's) impossible to play. As for tv, just get a tv tuner for ur computer. If the primary purpose is for doing comp stuff then you won't want to get an lcd tv that you can plug a comp into. Those things have very high latency and low resolution. Besides, you could surf the web and watch tv at the same time if you get a tv tuner card :)

I have a similar desire for the ultimate monitor, XChamp. But the suggestions in the replies so far were hardly what I would consider "ultimate". I am thinking of (at least) a 50" plasma for PC gaming and TV/DVD display but I am not sure how good they are for gaming. I know they are great for TV/DVD, but I was wondering if anyone here can recommend or not recommend any large plasma monitors for PC gaming?

And, yes, I know they are expensive but that is not really my concern. My concern is the awesomeness of the gaming experience. Is the limited native resolution or large pixel sizes problematic for games? Or are there other issues? Is any particular monitor better or worse than the others for 3D PC graphics in general or for games in particular?

Higher res does make a difference in games but if you are used to low res from playing on consoles then it should be fine.
I'm not sure on the latency of those large plasma screens but I would think that it would be very high due to the size. That would be fine for pretty much any game except FPS. High latency on a screen while playin an FPS will make it so you don't see much and will probably make you sick to your stomach, lol.

Since money is no object please buy me an ultimate monitor. Okay, here's the deal: I'll spend the next weeks of my life researching the ULTIMATE monitor on the planet and then you can buy tow of them. One for me and one for you. Doesn't that sound like a good deal? Cmon, help a poor gamer out.

AFAIK plasmas suck for resolution. Even the Sony KE50MR1 50" (at a cost of around £6k) can only do 1365x768.

Plasma screens have major burn-in problems if this is still what you want you will have low resolutions and you need to buy a graphics card that has special drivers to protect against burn-in on plasma screens... one just came out recently... I think I read it on theinquirer.net I don't remember
