Dual DDR on 3 DIMMS?

A lot of the nForce2 boards have only 3 DIMM slots and I'm just wondering, how does the mobo decide which two dimms to use for Dual DDR and which one to offset? Will it work either way? For example, if I have two 256 MB sticks and one 512 MB, one 256 MB would go to DIMM 3, where would the second 256 MB go? Would the mobo automatically detect which is the same and set it up accordingly?

Put the 512MB module in the memory slot that appears to stand alone and the two 256MB modules in the two remaining slots. The result: 1GB in Dual DDR - memory balanced across both channels. Everything's automatic from that point on.

What about if I had 3 DIMMS that are all the same size?
3x128MB -> 256MB in Dual DDR mode. 128MB in normal mode.

3x256MB -> 512MB in Dual DDR, 256MB in normal mode.

3x512MB -> 1024MB in Dual DDR, 512MB in normal mode.

3x1024MB -> 2048MB in Dual DDR, 1024MB in normal mode.

Not balanced in any of these cases.
