I am thinking of getting a DVD recordable drive but am stumped on which one to get. The primary purpose for this is to make backups of my movie collection so I can take them on the road with me. Now, I have heard that either DVD-R or DVD+R are the most compatible formats out there. Could anyone make a suggestion as to which format is the most compatible and easiest to work with? Also, if you could suggest a software to use, I would like to keep the DTS sound if it is encoded as such or Dolby Digital 5.1 Please help.

The problem is neither DVD-R nor DVD+R are the most compatible formats... Well, maybe the DVD-R is slightly more popular than DVD+R coz it's the first format to appear in DVD recordable market. Nevertheless, your best choice right now is to go for a dual format DVD burner, like the Sony DRU500A.

In My Own personal opinion and from what I have read DVD+R is the better of the two mentioned, as elzt said he is right in saying both are good. Nothing has been standardised with DVD so take a punt or get the DRU 500 burner.
