upgrading from T/T to T/T3, how to move stuff, how to conf..

Hi folks,

Longtime lurker. Just took opportunity to upgrade from Tungsten T to
T3. I have a variety of basic applications and medical applications
(Info Retriever, 5MCC, ePocrates, Sanford Guide, etc.). My main uses
are sync'ing to my workplace Novell Groupwise personal
calendar/schedule, checking medical info during patient care.

Question is how much I have to do to transfer my activities from the T
to the T3. Can I just sit the new T3 in the old cradle and hit sync
(intellisync)? Doubt it. Can I just beam each and every application
from the old to the new? Again, doubt it. Wonder if some won't work
because of activation codes and the kind of security that prevents me
from sharing a proprietary piece of software with all my friends and
workplace buddies.

Can folks advise me which things I can transfer simply and which I have
to reload as if downloading from scratch? And how hard will it be to
make my old desktop Dell at work which is used to sync'ing to my T now
sync with my T3?

Thanks all,
-- Josh in Syracuse

Hi Josh,

Just did an upgrade from Tungsten|T to Tungsten|T3 a few weeks ago. All I did was backup the Tungsten|T to SD card and then put
the card in the Tungsten|T3. I had a couple of programs that caused problems, an old version of Documents-to-Go and pTunes. I
deleted Documents-to-Go (there were to files that I had to manually delete with Filez. I upgraded to the latest version of
pTunes and I am a happy camper. I then deleted all of the backup sets on the SD card and created a new backup set and am good to go.

If you could give us a list of the programs, we might be able to let you know if any of them don't work on the Tungsten|T3.

Ciao . . . C.Joseph

Well, that's the whole idea of Backups through the HotSync Manager.
Upon hitting the Sync button, there would be a dialogue box for you to
identify your new T3. Select the correct user and off you go. However,
when I am in this kind of situation, I would further go into the
HotSync manager to change the options for Backup as well as other
modules. Just to make sure it's going to reinstall from the Backup
folder and get the appointment book rewritten by Palm Desktop or other
electronic diaries. And before you go ahead with all this, I'd suggest
that you delete everything in the Backup folder and do a regular
Hotsync with your old T. Backup folder often contains old apps and
files that you've long deleted from your T. Doing a fresh backup would
ensure that only what's current gets transferred to the new T3.

Good luck and remember to backup all your other data too on the desktop
side.

Should be fine, as long as you maintain the same user name. This will come
upa as an option on first sync.

Nope, couldn't fool the HotSync. Named the new T3 the same as the old
T/T but it knew the difference and wouldn't sync up lotsa stuff. It
tried loading antibiotic data from a medical program that wasn't on the
new T3 (which, of course, didn't sync successfully). The datebook
didn't load. And most importantly, all those programs I was hopin'
would automatically reload did not reload from backup or from anywhere
else. And I got a few error messages along the way. Looks like I have
to manually configure things and reload stuff from scratch.
Fortunately, that's not too difficult. But I was hoping for better.

Did you try the step-by-step directions on upgrading from one device to
another on www.palmone.com? You'll find them in the Support area. Select
your original device and the device to which you're moving data.

I've never tried this, but can you use a backup progrma like BackupBuddy
or BackMan to get all the data and settings from TT and then do a
Restore to the T3?
