It had to come some time! AGP2x was fine when AGP4x was introduced! In fact, AGP2x came out with the TNT2 video cards, a year later there was the GeForce, and 6 months later the GeForce2 series, all worked well with AGP2x!

It means that AGP8x should not be a factor in your purchasing decision. If you want a board with a new chipset and new features, you will get AGP8x. If you are happy with an older board, you will use AGP4x. Either way you will get the same performance.
