CD/DVD player/driver

I have a HP6325A desk top computer and since new the CD/DVD player has not functioned. If I put a disc in the driver you can hear it start up and working but nothing appears on the monitor. I am a novice and limited to the extent I will "fiddle" without advise.
I am running windows 7 Home premium.

Did you instal the new drive yourself? If you did, did you attach the data cable as well as the power? When you go to my computer do you see the disc drive listed? Have you checked device manager for any errors?
