Hi,

I have just bought a Yamaha 01X and I'm after some decent headphones and a
vocal microphone to do it some justice.
However, I don't have a fortune to spend, so I was after some
recommendations.

I hear that the Shure SM58 is an excellent vocal microphone - is that the
one to go for?
In terms of headphones for monitoring, are Sennheiser the best make to go
for? Do any of the Sennheiser headphones come with a 1/4 inch jack as
standard?
I hate using 3.5mm to 1/4inch adapters. I just have a bad history with
them.

Thanks for the help.

SM58 is a great inexpensive vocal mic, so YES.

Sennheiser and Sony make decent reference headphones - try ones with good
isolation for outside noise.

Good luck.

The main feature of the '58 is it's durability.
Designed for the 'rock band' live stage environment,
it's a great value for that use.
If you're recording and willing to give up
some build strength you could do better for sound
with (for example) a CAD 195 or AKG C535.

Cans are not normally best for "monitoring".
The better Senns or Sony 7506's are OK for
the my typical phones use: editing/tracking
but may be overkill for tracking.

The Sony has 1/8"-1/4" adapters but are threaded.
As long as they are left in place they should
hold up for moderate use.

The SM58 is not a bad choice. It is rugged, reliable, and most singers
are familiar with it.

Avoid headphones which are intended for DJs. They usually have a hyped
bottom end.

All of the good headphones intended for studio monitoring by AKG,
Sennheiser or Sony come with a 1/4" adapter. Often it screws on, which
makes it more reliable. I've had a bad history with those things, too,
but I now have a procedure which avoids problems with them.

Unscrew it, add a drop of contact cleaner, then screw it back
together.

Apply heat shrink tubing so that it cannot be disassembled without
cutting off the head shrink.

That usually lasts for a year or two, then I replace the whole
connector with a Neutrik 1/4" TRS plug.
