Good Folks,
I have been playing The Conquerors Expansion in single player mode. However,
there is a problem I hope to solve. I recently bought a new Media Center PC.
It uses Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. If I run the game after
watching TV on the computer, the map will scroll uncontrollably to one side,
preventing me from playing a game. However, if I reboot my system and then
run the game, it works fine. Now, I can live with this. But it would be nice
if I did not have to reboot each time I wanted to play this game. I use the
TV features regularly. My system is very stable otherwise. Other games play
fine even after using the TV features, including Age of Mythology. However,
Age of Kings behaves identical to The Conquerors Expansion in this respect.
I am using a MS Internet Keyboard Pro, MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 using
the included software and latest updates. I disable McAfee antivirus (fully
updated) when playing games. All Windows Updates are installed. A clean
install of Windows and all programs did not clear the problem.
Intel P4 3.0 CPU
2 GB RAM
Two 250 GB Hard Drives
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis (ATI) Video Card (drivers updated)
SB Audigy Card
Perhaps someone can provide me with some clues to a solution for this little
puzzle.

I had this problem about 3.5 years ago when I only had AOK. It didn't happen
all the time; maybe 1 in 15 games. Usually it occurred when I was rapidly
switching views between two pitched battles. Some people speculated it was a
mouse incompatibility problem. I never knew. I began using the work-around
solution below. About a month later after I installed The Conquerors it
never recurred. So I never bothered researching it further.
Try moving your mouse in the direction of the scroll to regain control. Its
counter-intuitive but it usually works. I liken it to steering a car in the
direction of a skid to regain control.
So, you're not the only one this has happened to. A guy named Diablo asked
on 06/21. See the bottom of that thread as to what he said he finally
figured out was the problem (for him).

I had it quite a lot of this with AOK as a result of using an old mouse into
which dirt had penetrated quite deeply. Taking it apart and cleaning it was
only partially successful and I eventually bought a new one which cured the
problem completely.
Also, while modern cordless keyboards and optical mice may be 'cool' they are
also significantly less reliable than old fashioned designs. It's a trade off
between convenience and reliability.
