I currently highly anticipat the 'rumoured' 13 inch Macbook Pro which should be out soon, however if their graphics cards are only 64MB shared then I may need to look for an alternative.
I'm looking for a notebook that can run XP and Vista, (we run some Vista's at work on core duo desktops so they should suffice). Good graphics capability, but most importantly, not bigger than 13 inches, light, thin and great battery life. A bonus would be a built in (or available as addon) encrypted hdd enclosure.
My budget is anything below apple's current MacBook Pros.
Ok, after a bit of searching, I've found two desirable notebooks just in case the 13 inch Macbook pro's doesn't live up to my expectations:
ASUS W5F or the Thinkpad X60s, I've never really bought from ASUS so I'm not sure about their notebook quality and the thinkpads are now Chinese which makes me a bit wary...
I have an IBM X 40 (previous generation). Great notebook. Allows me to stay away from the power socket all day (8h+) when at university.
The only thing that is kinda bad is that it does not have an integrated DVD drive; if you need lots of disks go withanother one. For an external one dont go with the ibm one, it is really bad has many problems (like trouble playing DVDs, takes forever to load disks, ...) (unless Lenovo has done some serious reworking).
There is an integrated security subsystem that allows to make a secure "partition" (thats what they call it, in reallity it is on the C drive) that encryps and decrypts on the fly. Also you have a fingerprint reader.
What is good on the X60 in comparison to the previous geneeration that it uses SATA 2.5' drives (they should have OK speeds) and not IDE 1.8' Drives (they are sloowww - I get about 17 MB/s avg. read out of it)
The intel GMA 900 (in my notebook), is enough for everything but games. The GMA 950 (in the X60), should be enough for vista (I think i read on the intel site that it is vista ready - whatever that means) (dont know if threre is an option of putting an ATI in it).
if you go for ane make sure you have an core duo and not an pentium M. More speed with more battery life (the XP bug seems to be fixed).
The quality my notebook is very good. I dropped it from the desk a couple of times without any damage (although i now managed to crack a corner of the case of the screen when i dropped it down the stairs in the train - still works though - looks horrible however with the crack and sone srcarces it got while in my bag - i was actually thinking about replacing it with an X60). The had disk has a sensor that detects any faals and moves the read head of the HD to the "standby position", protecting the HD. I dont know how good customer support is, as I never had to contact them (same goes for all other Thinkpads I/my Family own).
Lastly in Switzerland lenovo are promoting the thinkpads in university (i gat mine for nearly 50% of the original price). Not sure how they do it in your country - you will want to look for such reductions.
and before anyone makes any stupid comments; yes i dont treat my notebook very well - but it does show the quality. It is now 1.5 years old and runns very well - even if it doesnt look healty anymore. My old dell i had before was dead and shattered within 6 Months.
Another thought: if you can wait, look at nootebooks with the next generation of intel mobile processors (whatever the "mobile" conroe is called) or an turion64 x2
Apart from that, if you cant get the mac and dont need an integrated DVD drives, i would defenetely go with an X60 - especially due to quality reasons. i'm not sure about Asus but i havent seen any ads on their site about it being able to withstand shocks, drops, ... and it doesnt look very stable
