hello,

i have an RNC 1773 compressor from FMR audio. i haven't used it for a
while, but now i have a hack-around need to use it.

i can't find the power supply to it. i tried my "normal" ones, but i
think the pin-2 hot stuff is different.

specifically, the gain reduction led's go on with no signal. if i turn
the ratio control up, all the led's light. if i put the ratio knob to
zero, then the leds go to zero. completely weird.

so does anyone know if the RNC uses a funky pin setup requiring use of
something other than a "normal" 9v adaptor?

There is no such thing as a "normal 9v adaptor". Too many variations:
(AC, DC, current capacity, connector type/size, filtering, etc. etc.
etc.)

The back of mine is clearly marked "9VAC 500mA". Sounds like
you are trying to run it on DC. *Don't do that!* :-(

Go down to Radio Shack, find a connector that fits the RNC, and
buy a 9V AC wall-wart that supplies at least 500mA.

Assuming you haven't fried it already playing around with
inappropriate power supplies.

Contact FMR audio directly via email. They are quite helpful & will
repair the unit if needed. I got a coupla RNC's w/out power supplies &
got new power supplies at radio shack (answering machine supplies is
how I think they're labeled - yes 9vac NOT DC). However, w/the new
power supplies they emitted a low frequency hum. I email FMR, they
said it was likely used w/a noncompatible power supply (too many
volts)& the power capaciters needed to be replaced. I sent it in
(along w/ one of the radio shack power supplies for them to check out),
they repaired them & sent them back, now they work fine.

It needs a lot more current than most 9V gadgets. That might be your
problem.

"Normal" 9-volt operation is as a substitute for 9v DC batteries with a
low amperage. This isn't what you're after here.

It takes 9VAC. If you use a DC adaptor, it can only generate one of the
two internal supply rails. The AC supply is part of a trick to get two
bipolar legs off of one wall wart.
