Hi all -

I'm starting a new project, and I think I will need one more flavor of
mic pre to do ensure having enough variety to cover most bases. The
artist is a very talented acoustic and electric guitarist/singer in the
Dave Matthews/John Mayer vein, and I want to make sure I do the
recording justice.

Right now, I have some nice stuff which has totally fit my needs as a
television composer and occasional producer/engineer, but I haven't had
to do a full album project for a few years, and this will be released
either on a major or with national distribution, so I just want to be
able to do the job right.

Present gear:

Pres: A pair of Calrex PQ15s, an Aphex 107 stereo tube mic pre, and a
Mackie Onyx with it's mic pres and Firewire card. I also have a pair of
Quad Eight 248 modules that are being racked now, but they probably
won't be ready for the project.

Compression: Cranesong Trakker, Art Pro VLA, 2 dbx 160X. I had a
couple of RNCs, but I'm probably the only person around who didn't
particularly care for them, so they're history.

I think that I have the discrete "Neve-like" sound covered with the
Calrecs, and the neutral sound with the Onyx and probably the Aphex.
Should I get something like the Universal 610 or one of the half rack
Summit pieces to cover the warmer thing?

For mics, I'll be using an AKG "The Tube" modified by Tracy Korby with
an original C12 capsule, an Audio Techica 4050, a 414, an RCA BK5-A
ribbon, and an assortment of the usual suspects.

All of this will feed Logic or Pro Tools through a Digi 002 or the
Firewire card of the Onyx.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Get ONE good clean preamp. Millennia Media, Great River, John Hardy, all
these folks make good clean sounding preamps. That at least gives you a
baseline reference that you can use to judge the other stuff you've got

You might consider ditching the Aphex and trying a real tube mike preamp
as well, but to be honest everything else is a lot less important than
having a good clean front end.

You can do a lot better than the Onyx and the Aphex in the clean and
neutral range, and I'd suggest doing that before anything else.

I never liked that AKG, but I never heard the Korby-modified one. If it
works well with your vocalist, go for it.

You might also consider getting a high-end converter.

Hi,
I used this SPLmono mic pre/eq/compressor thing recently the 2u one.
It's not really high end, but there's loads of control all over it. An
it's quite cheap. Ideal for basses, kik drums, lo percussion
I'd forget about the analogue inputs on the 002, and get an 8way a/d
converter. My Ramsa "wz-ad96" is head and shoulders over the 002, dunno
about the onyx, you probably will run into trouble running that
alongside the 002. Digidesign are a bit funny that way.
Regards
