When i start up my age of empires II age of kings games it
starts with the usual cinematics. Once they are done my
screen simply goes black and if i try to quit my desktops
colors become distorted and if I try to end the program
with ctrl, alt, dlt my computer will freeze. I am running
the Microsoft XP home edition with service pack 2 update.
If you know what is wrong please help, I really want to play!

Did this only start happening when you installed service pack 2?

I don't have SP2 but I believe it might have something to do with giving the
game access to the net (Firewall settings). At least that happens if you got
the Zone Alarm Firewall - if you don't allow access, the game will not
start.
You might also want to try to add the following to your short cut on the
desktop (properties command): nostartup. It will skip the intro. For more
details look in the readme file in your AOK directory
