I've got a weird problem. Randomly my computer while sitting idle or at some times 100% maxed out either via disk io or cpu it just hard hangs. Numlock, caps etc... nothing.. I have to reset it.
If someone could take a peek at my configuration and maybe give me a direction or two to investigate futher it would greatly be appreciated. I have SiSoft Sandra Pro. if more reports are needed.
Here is my current config.

If you've got a microphone connected, disconnect it, and see if the problem recurs. I had the same problem, and it was a process called sapisvr.exe, which is the speach recognition engine in XP.
I have a some background services/programs running at all times. I've disabled each and every one in a systematic fashion and the problem still occurs.
I'm running the following in the background.
MSN Messenger
Adobe Acrobat Tray (acrotray.exe)
ATI Control Panel (atiptaxx.exe)
Creative Audio HQ Control Panel for my SB Live 5.1 Plat.
Diskkeeper 7.0 latest build (DKService.exe)
Adaptec DirectCD (directcd.exe)
McAfee (MCSheild.exe)
McAfee (mcagent.exe)
McAfee (mcvsrte.exe)
QuickBooks 2000 Pro (qbdagent.exe)
Microsoft IntelliType Natual Keyboard (type32.exe)
WinAmp 2.80a (winampa.exe)
Volume Contol (built-in to WinXP)
That's all that is running on my system. When the computer is idle here is some basic info from TaskManager.
I am kind of unsure of why you need all of those processes starting up when your pc boots. Instead of shutting them down, prevent them from booting up with Windows. I have used Startup Cop for this in the past. Even though you have disabled them one at a time, it could be that 2 or more are in conflict with one another.
Another quick question, is you drive NTFS, it might be unrelated, but it som TSR's have caused problems for me before.
