i have some redtop 4x datawrite dvd-r's and cant write at more than 2x on them. i have the 2.0f firmware installed and dma is enabled.

i have this issue in nero (latest) and dvddecrypter for iso's.

i have checked the drive speeds in nero and get 40something meg/sec on each drive so that cant be the issue.

does anyone have any ideas?

I have the same drive and have NO problems burning at 4X. I have found Sony to be a very picky drive when it comes to the media you use. I use the Verbatim DVD+R 4X discs and burn a total DVD in 14 minutes. Perhaps you should try another brand (Verbatim's patent company is Mitsubishi Chemical). Since I have great success with the Verbatim's...I have stuck with them.

Office Depot carries the 5 pack of Verbatim 4X. It's the higher quality ones. 5 for $17.99...a little high...but...as you said...most paks are 25 or more.

Just make sure to try good quality brands. Many have complained about Ritek and "second" brand names...and that they don't write well. I would think you might have success if you get Verbatim, TDK, Phillips and the like...they should all be Mitsubishi Chemical. Don't go the Memorex route...some of the worst quality. See what you can do about finding 4X Sony media as well...although my experience with Sony CD-R's is that even though they might be rated 48X...they only burn at 32X.
