....but with what?

I have an old PARIS DAW and am looking for something that is up-to-date or
better.

What are some recommendations? (Let's try and keep it under $5,000)

I've seen ProTools and Cubase but I have some questions:

What input method is used? Do they come with a digitizing board or other
input method?

Is Cubase SX mostly for MIDI with some audio thrown in? I was looking at a
spec sheet and I didn't see much about audio, it was all MIDI improvements.

the other way round - audio with some midi

yeh, well, ermm ... when sx was released, a whole lot of midi functionality
was dumped (or just not ported), and midi functionality has got better the
higher the cubase version

Cubase will run with a massive variety of audio / midi cards / boxes /
controllers

I think the same is not true of PT, in fact, i don't use PT so won't venture
anymore about that

Cubase SX on the other hand has fantastic 32bit sound, mixer and effects
(with lots of great plug-ins freely available on the net) along with really
powerful editing - from track level right down to sample level there would
appear to be infinite levels of undo (hd space dependant ...) for edits -
cut/copy/splice etc, processes - gain/reverse/resample etc and of course
applying effects 'straight to the tape' which once used is (imho) a pain in
the ass to live without :)

at the end of the day, both are powerful pro applications capable of more
precision than 98% of the population can perceive, so for me, its down to a)
price : power ratio and b) ease of workflow / slickness of interface

in which case, Cubase SX on homebrew PC wins hands down

just a thought ...

Does Cubase use ASIO drivers? Or... the other way. Does Cubase use cards
that use ASIO drivers? Or.. something.

My PARIS card has ASIO drivers and I was wondering if Cubase (or PT) will
use it. It's a great card and if I don't have to give it up I won't.

What about this thing?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/co [...] 908&is=REG

20 IO's (24/192) for ~$600 looks a little dodgy to me. But I haven't been
looking for a while.

It depends on what you buy. PARIS was an integrated system with the
A/D and D/A converters as well as a control surface tossed in free
with the software (or vice versa). These days most sytems are a la
carte, where you buy the software that you like ot use, you buy the
input/output hardware (the fancy "sound card" ) supporting as many
channels as you need, and if you prefer mixing with something that
looks more like a console than a mouse, you buy a hardware control
surface.

The closest things to PARIS that I can think of today are:
- The Digidesign 002 which is an I/O box bundled with ProTools
- Various control/I/O devices from TASCAM bundled with some limited
version of Cubase, usually, I think (but they work with other
software)
- The Yamaha 01X system

These days, it's a pretty capable audio system. The Cubase development
cycle sort of went like this:

Powerful MIDI program
Powerful MIDI program with audio clip playing thrown in
Much improved audio capabilities with not much new in MIDI
What it is today.

There are several levels of the Steinberg (now owned by Yamaha)
programs, and the good thing about them is that they're
upward-compatible. You can start with an entry level version and
upgrade it to add more features.

Hi,

I'd suggest that you also ask at the Paris newsgroup:

http://news.parisnewsgroup.com/

There are many users on the newsgroup who are transitioning from Paris.
Lots of folks there like Cubase SX, Nuendo, and Samplitude. Some are
even using two PCs networked or lightpiped together to extend the life
of their Paris rigs.

Good luck,

Graham
