That is for stealthy-type recording of live concerts. Plug in a miniature
condensor mic (like found here: www.core-sound.com) and that powers the mic
as well as provides a low frequency rolloff. It probably looks like a mint
box so it is easier to get it through security checkpoints.

Thanks Thomas.
What's the difference between it a mic-preamp? Do you need both or is it mic
dependant?
(newb question I know - but I learn fast
I'm surfing over to core-sound now!
Cheers,
Chris

The story I'd heard was about Lee Sklar, James Taylor's bassist. Story
goes that he had an extra 'tone' knob installed on his bass - not
connected. Producer would say "Lee, can we change the tone a bit?" and
Lee would turn the 'producer's knob' a bit, and said producer would say
'yeah, that's better'. Even if just an urban legend, there's a lesson
in there.

I believe that's who my bass-playing buddy was speaking of (James Taylor's
bassist)
