I just put my computer together and everything works fine except for my floppy drive, windows detects it and the cables are connected correctly, but it won't read any disks, why is this??
Well lonster - I was right there with ya. It seems like Simple Problem - Simple Solution. It is - your cable is reversed. I swore up and down mine weren't - they were. Use the conector with the twist and reverse the connection.
Oh yeah - svol... ignore my previous post.

There are 4 ways you can install a 2 connector floppy cable, and that's assuming the twist is on the right end! And only one of those ways works!
Red stripe lines up with Pin 1 on the board, which is marked. At the other end, the twist in the cable is near the drive. And that red stripe goes facing into the case (as opposed to your IDE cables where the red stripe faces out of the case).
When it's connected properly, your floppy light will flash when you turn your computer on, and then go out until you use it.

I have the same floppy error 40 as lonster, and i've tried reversing the cable so that the red is facing left, but it wont go in that way--there is a little tab that prevents it.
if you can see it, there is usually a "1" on the motherboard near the connection, marking what side the red striped wire (the 1 wire) goes into on the motherboard. there is usually also a 1 on the floppy drive (maybe the bottom, maybe right above the connection, depends on the drive), again showing where the red striped wire goes into the floppy. if the tab prevents you from making the connection properly, try getting another floppy cable.
A lot of floppy drives don't have the tab notch cut. I don't know why. If your cable has a tab on the outside, it should be pointing downward.
Some drives have a little breakout portion in the card on the bottom, which can be twisted out for cables with tabs. I'm speaking of a tab notch position that's oulined with small holes.
