Appologies for such a simple question. I used to keep up with all this stuff, then I got busy, for a couple of years. :)

I am looking to upgrade my board and will be going with the ASUS P4P800 Deluxe. The only question is which memory to go with. Since price IS an issue, I have decided 512MB will have to do, but I have absolutely no idea what type of ram to get.

My questions are:

1) What is the difference between CORSAIR TWINX512-3200LL PC3200 2X256MB DDR 2-3-2 SILVER HEAT SPREADER and CORSAIR CMX512-3200C2 DDR 512MB PC3200 CAS2 32MX8 184DIMM W/ HEAT SPREADER and which is better?

2) Is Corsair the way to go or should I look at Mushkin, Kingston or Infinion?

3) What memory should I ultimately buy and why?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Don't let anyone in here tell you what to buy, instead go by the opinion of a news source that has tested various modules on your particular board! Here's your link!

Aye, I had read that review, which is why I was looking at the cosair to begin with. I guess the only remaining question then is what is the difference between the TwinX 2x256 and the straight 512 stick?

Because the said motherboard adds performance when 2 or 4 memory modules are used, it would be better to go with two 256MB modules rather than one 512MB. If money is an issue, you may want to pick one of those cheaper memory modules in that anandtech article. The TwinMos modules are available for purchase at MemoryX.
