XP memory limit

So I was in a local computer store today and the counter tech told me something I've never heard before. He claimed that WinXP is desined to use a maximum of 768 megs of RAM, and that putting in 1 gig reduces performance by as much as 30 percent. Is that right? I'm skeptical but hey he does this for a living...

Any thoughts?

I'd wager he's not making too good of a living with mis-information such as that. He's wrong.

Windows me has a limit of 512. As far as I know xp should use what ever the motherboard will handle which is usually around 2 gig or so on most boards.

In reality the XP limit would be 4 gig, seeing as how it's a 32 bit OS.

I believe i heard something similar to that, however i think that was the original release of XP Home, SP1 fixed that issue, and XP pro never had a problem with it in the first place.
