I just received a response from a Marantz tech support person saying
that the problems with the pad and the pre-amp have been fixed.
His said it was a first run issue, that all of those have been sold,
and the ones on the shelves now don't have those problems. Unfortunately
he did not have a serial number for the fix.

If you don't have a serial number after which the problem has been
fixed in production, then you can't confirm that a unit that a dealer
has in stock is a fixed one. All you can do is ask when he received it
from Marantz. If it was a long time ago, figure on sending it on for
modification (or buy from someone else). If you buy from a large
dealer who moves a lot of those units such as Full Compass Systems or
BSW, your chances of getting a current production one is better than
if you go to some $10 cheaper eBay seller or your local mom-and-pop
music store.
