I'm debating between an API 3124+ or two UA 6176's. I record mostly
pop/rock acts, and whenever the budget allows I'm involved in
pre-production to work on arrangements. My recordings are good, not
great. I'm currently using a Mackie 24X8(for pres only, I use a DAW),
and a Peavey VMP-2. Mics include: Rode NT2, 2 Shure SM81, 2 Oktava
MC-012, 4 Oktava 319, AKG D112, 3 Sennheiser 604, 4 SM57, AT D550, etc.
No stores around me carry the API. The only way they can get one in
is if I buy one. So I've come to the gurus for advice-- which do you
prefer for rock and pop? Thanks in advance
Are you certain that you'll be recording stereo? If not you can save a lot
of money and put it on a good vocal mic, for instance. I have a 6176 and
don't really care for the miniature VU meter on it. And as to the sound of
it, it is certainly the real thing but then so many others are as well. Go
to 3D Audio for their listening test CD's. Whatever you do don't buy
something that can't be tested and returned.
Good luck

Well, they're quite different, both in sound and function. The 6176 is
a mic preamp with low and high frequency EQ and a compressor, and the
3124+ is four mic preamps. Why not get both? Or maybe a couple of
6176s and a couple of API 212 preamps in a rack?
This isn't (or shouldn't be) and either/or choice. They're both good
tools and there are probably equally good places to use each one in
your projects.

You could try a rental house, or call some dealers who will work with
you by mail. But really, even if you did get the loan of one or the
other, would you be able to tell in a reasonably short period of time
if you love it or not? A sensible approach would be to assume that
eventually you'll get both of them, or one of them and one of
something else, so just buy one from a dealer who will allow you
to return it if you really decide it's not for you. Learn to love it.
It probably won't take very long.

Everyone just wants to be told what to do right?
Forget both. Get yourself an API lunchbox or rack. Fill it up with as
many API 500 series pres as you care to spend right now. Then later,
get more as you can afford them. Better yet...leave a few open slots
for the lovely API eq's and even a pair of the compressors.
For rock and pop, you can't go wrong with API.
