Can anyone suggest some software to convert MS to LR stereo. Can it be done
with Audition?
Any advise welcome

Best regards

The function is built into Adobe Audition:
Effects : Amplitude : Channel Mixer : L-R to Mid-Side
Effects : Amplitude : Channel Mixer : Mid-Side to L-R

It is a very simple function. Some would characterize it
as "trivial".

Any application that allows you to clone the side signal, invert the clone,
mix the uninverted side and the mid to one output channel, and mix the
inverted side and the mid to the other output channel will do. Some
have built-in functions for this but if you can perform the operations
I list you can do it "manually."

If you understand the principle involved, the solution will become
obvious. There's a clear block diagram in a paper at the Neumann
microphone web site (don't let the German bother you, just look at the
diagram):

https://www.neumann.com/infopool/do [...] fo0039.PDF

You should be able to do this with any competent DAW program, if it
doesn't already have a built-in MS conversion tool or plug-in.

1. Make a copy of the S recording on a new track (now you have two).
2. Invert the polarity ("phase" ) of one of the S tracks.
3. Pan one S track full left, pan the other full right
4. Pan the M track to the center
5. Reduce the gain of the two S tracks a bit (the application note
shows the square root of 2, but you just want to be sure that when
you mix all three tracks, you don't go over the full scale level.
6. Mix the three tracks to a new stereo track.

Now you have L-R stereo. You can play with the mix of the M and S-pair
(always adjust the gain of the S tracks as a pair) to adjust the
stereo spread. You can play with EQ of the S tracks (a little boost in
the 200-400 Hz range often sounds neat). Lotsa stuff.
