I just bought a maxtor 120 gb 8mb cache hd now all of a sudden its making a clicking sound whenever i access the drive is that bad??

Also what temperatures should a HDD run at safely?

Yes, a clicking sound is not good news. Time to scan the drive, and be prepared to return it.

HDD temperatures can vary widely, averaging from 41ºF-131ºF according to a drive manufacturer like Western Digital. Personally, though, I'd be looking for a better cooling solution if an IDE disk was regularly operating at 113ºF (45ºC) or higher. I prefer for a disk to stay near the 90ºF (32ºC) mark, even under a fair amount of stress, simply to ensure the longevity of the device. But, hey ... I'm sorta picky about such things.

Ok thanks for the info, right now this hd is running at 113 so i'll pick up a hdd cooler when i go to exchange it.
