Does anyone know what the situation is for the various tape companies?

ATR have a 'lastest updates' page, but it looks like they won't be
producing tapestock for a few more months.

I've heard that Quantegy will be calling itself 'Quantegy Recording
Solutions' and that Quantegy tapestock is slowly trickling in.
In the meantime, I haven't been able to find anyone who has the stuff
in stock.

(This is in the UK. If anyone knows of a supplier, I'd be happy.
Studiospares and River are only advertising 467 at the moment, which
is no good to me. I feel nervous about scavenging 1991 Ampex tape
from ebay..)

What I'm really interested in is the status of RMG/Emtec. Supposedly
they will be entering full production soon. Does anyone have any
updates?

Can't help with the UK but you could try....

http://www.usrecordingmedia.com/opreelrectap.html

I bought a case from them a couple of months back.... cheaper than ebay and
more dependable. They have stock on numerous flavors...

You could also try....
http://www.quantegy.com/disttemp.asp

enter UK for country and check with all the distributors they list...

RMGI in Holland has purchased the equipment and intellectual property
of Emtec. It will be a couple more months before things are up and
running again but I'm sure it will be distributed in the UK.

No, and take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

Yes, they have trouble getting electrical power to their facility right
now because of the lack of local infrastructure. But they should not be
long.

Quantegy has been making small quantities of a couple types, and the
best way to get it right now is to go through SPARS and see if you can
get in on the SPARS buy.

No word on RMG, but you should know they really have no connection at
all with Emtec other than having bought some material from them. Send
them an e-mail! I was expecting they would be at the AES show.

There are continuing persistent rumors coming from the AES show about
Zonal, but you're at the show and I had to help mix a bad rock group with
Monte McGuire trying to keep a straight face. So I don't know the details
on the Zonal rumors yet.

Now that's a new one on me. I don't even know what happened to Zonal,
although they appear to have been owned by RACAL at some stage.

When the news broke on Quantegy, there was a guy who claimed that he
worked for a firm in the UK that was still making recording tape.
I did wonder if that was somehow related to Zonal. He wouldn't give any
details though.

Zonal was owned by Racal for a while, then they were independant again.
And they went bankrupt in the early nineties, shortly after getting a
toehold on the American market. By the time they started getting people
really interested in their products, they were gone.

All their production facilities were sold off, so any tape that they sell
is going to have to be made on-contract at another facility. There are a
huge number of tape manufacturing plants out there, mostly making stuff
like videotape, cassettes, and credit card stripes. Getting one of them to
do contract work is easy but getting them to do it right can be an adventure.

Zonal has been gone for a good while now. I don't know of any manufacturing
facilities in the UK left even for low-grade tape, but there are a bunch of
them in Asia and South America.

'Beck' on homerecording.com did send them an email, before I got around
to it. This is the body of the message:

"Thank you for you request for samples of the RMG SM-911 1/2" and
SM-468-1/4" analog tapes.

Our group (ICMG) has been appointed as the North American distributor for
the RMGI Studio Tape products, we are all former EMTEC personnel so we are
very familiar with the products that RMGI has now started to manufacture.
We hope to have samples in sometime this month of the SM-911 and samples of
the SM-468 in late July.

Please send over your phone number so I can contact you when the evaluation
samples start to arrive. We will also be posting any updated delivery
information on our website which is www.rmgi-usa.com

Thanks again for your interest in the RMG Analog products. We look forward
to being of service to you."

For the curious, here is a link to the thread:
http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=158419

I guess I'll have to ask them about European distribution now :-)
