It allows OEM's to install a codec, normally used for "onboard" devices, into a slot card, with no additional hardware. In other words, it's for adding the worst, cheapest hardware. And because there isn't much demand in the retail market, if you find a card to fit it, that card will probably cost as much as a much better PCI card.

I had one of those on my ECS K7S5A board... came with a FREE 56k ACR modem...
1) Modem was not compatablw with SIS chipset
2) No drivers for XP with no plans to develop them
My opinion of ACR / AMR / CNR???
Waste of space that would be better off employed by a PCI card.

Indeed, a useless slot, luckily a lot of mobo makers leave them out of their boards.

well my Mobo has a random plug at the bottom of the pci slots.

its called CNR.

but the mobo manufacturer just said in their books that they use it to do stuff on the mobo in the factory (perhaps they plug their computer testing systeminto it or somthing.

but it doesn't take up any room on my mobo (well not any usefull room) because its right on the edge

It often take up the plase of the first or last PCI slot.

I guess your mobo maker also sells their mobo's to OEMs.
