Headphone amp box. Generally run to around 6 outputs. Required headphone
specs vary from unit to unit.

Other manufacturers do similar units but the Behringer offers the best
"bang for the buck"

Not necessary with these units. Splitters are generally a bad idea as
you wont have individual control.

>what headphones impedance to use?

I shouldn't matter, these units have individual amplifiers

>how to connect them?

Signal in the back, headphones in the front

Any decent amplifier that will drive speakers will handle
dozens of headphones.

Buy or build? (the connection is very simple)

> what headphones impedance to use?

Generally much higher than speakers, so you can parallel many
of them.

> how to connect them?

Frequently, a "build-out"/"attenuation" resistor is used (~100
ohms) between the amplifier and the headphones. This allows
even more headphones to be connected. It also attenuates some
of the low-level "grunge" that many power amps have. You don't
hear it through the speakers unless you have your ear up against
the speaker.

Just be aware that on the Behringer boxes the signal degrades pretty
significantly as you move down the headphone outputs. The signal at
output #1 is okay, but the signal at output #4 is much weaker and
noisier in comparison. I've noticed this on two boxes that I've used.
YMMV.

Buy the Telex splitter boxes. Markertek carries them. Make sure you get
the stereo models if you want stereo.

Connect them to the output of any power amplifier. The Haflers are nice
enough.

Use whatever headphones you want.

I've got a couple of Rane HC6 boxes and they don't exhibit that problem.
If the OP wants to use dedicated headphone amps, maybe they're a better
choice.

I've always been happy with a bunch of the Little Red Cue Boxes powered
by an amp. Redco recently dropped the price to $99.

Is this not a multi-amp box with each amp being driven off the same signal ?
If so, then either the user has a vivid imagination, or the power supply
and/or routing in the unit is incredibly flawed.

Any old power amp will drive the Furman HR-2 (dual stereo jack) stations
which can be daisy chained almost to infinity. I've noticed no signal loss
when driving up to ten of these boxes, daisychained, and loaded with 80 to
600 ohms per jack.

Does anybody make a version of this sort of thing that incorporates a
L-mono
R-mono
L+R mono
Switch?
