I have a nice shiney black computer, running off a Black APC 500VA UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply).
The UPS is very handy for when possums dance on the powerlines and black the heighbourhood out for 3 seconds. (also turns the possums into balls of charcoal too)

Anyway, Just a word of warning about putting too much load onto one UPS or powerpoint.

My Ups has 5 available plugs, 1 for the ADSL modem, 1 for the Powerful 17" CRT, one for the Overclocked PC, one for the HIFI for my audio needs and a spare.
As it was cold, i grabbed the closest electric heater and whacked it on... within 10 seconds

CLICK Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Beep Beep Beep!

Thats right... all those components on one board had maxxed out the line and the UPS circuit breaker had clicked out.

So i VERY quickly shut off the heater, then powered off my system. A reset later and all was good again, MINUS the electric heater!

But if i didn't have the UPS i wouldnt have had any circuit breaker... so i wouldnt have known that i was overloading the line...
A potentially dangerous situation, for safety reasons and for System/Component integrity. (fried PSU anyone?)

Something to bear in mind when you are running everything off a single powerpoint.

Hi,

I have a surgemaster 2. I think it's a power bar. I have 6,7 things connected to it. (tv, vcr, printer, speakers, xbox, monitor.)

Was the CLICK Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Beep Beep Beep! from the pc speakes or the UPS?

"Possums", sorry but what's that. I alwas talk in french. So there's a few words in English that I don't understand.

ROFLMAO! PooBaa, you're kidding right, you actually hooked an electric heater into your UPS, I wouldn't have told anyone, I guess there is a fine line between Genius and Insanity after all.

LMAO!

Thanks Man I needed a good laugh!

surge master? is that a "surge protector" or a UPS?

Surge protectors just protect angainst spikes and overload, UPS units also provide battery backup power when the line drops out, partially or completely.

Either way, if its good quality it should have a trip switch for line overload.

Ill explain the noises
CLICK - The sound of the overload switch clicking over.
Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz - Background buzz of the DC to AC converter at work, drawing battery power to keep the PC and peripherals up and running.
Beep Beep Beep - is the noise made by the UPS unit to allert the user that it's running on Battery power. (and steps should be taken to hibernate/shutdown/whatever).

And finally, Possums are tree dwelling noctournal marsupial animals. They eat leaves and fruits and nuts... and often use powerlines as convenient modes of transport... until they touch one line while still holding another. ZAAP!
Fried possum is quite common.

Yeah in hindsight it wasn't a terribly smart move... But at the time i didnt really think about it.

Easy fix though. And no damage done.
Very nice UPS. *pats UPS*

Oh and the plugs are split 3/2, with 3 with surgeprotection and battery backup, the other two only surgeprotection and the heater WASN'T on the battery backup
THe critical items are on the battery backup, the monitor, PC and ADSL modem.

PooBaa at this site, I consider you, one of the smartest posters here, but everyone has a brain fart sooner or later, it happens to all of us. By the way whats the temp over in Australia now, its in the middle 90's over here in the states?

temps are around 4-14C.
Not very cold i know, but its a annoying damp cold... and our houses have Shite insulation, especially ours. So in the mornings room temp can get down to 12C!

In winter the small study thats my PC room usually stays at around 17C. Still not great, but warmer than the rest of the house thanx to my room heater PC.

Another benefit of overclocking

My surge Master 2 is to protect my computer from lighning I think. So when there's lighning outside I turn off my surge master and my computer won't be damaged from the lighning.

I know this is problebly a dumb question put I just don't know. I'm not dumb, i'm really smart: Can I get an overload on my surge master?

You did what?

Dumbass.

We have those in Michigan as well. In fact, I believe it's the only Marsupial in the western hemisphere!

Sometimes vicious buggers... and play havoc with the power!
A number of times ive seen charcoal corpses still fried onto the line the touched last.

Those buggers, and our generally unreliable power, is the main reason for my UPS purchace

LOL.

You forgot they opften use many hundreds of watts if not thousands?

Also don't plug in: dishwasher, big hairdryer, washing machine, cloth dryer, electric barbecue and frying pan.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole

Not to be rude but France is not the only place where people talk in French. Did you really think that this is the only place where people talk in French? In Quebec there's also alot of people that talk in French. I live in Alberta Canada. I nerver saw any possums. But that doesn't mean that we don't have any. Does anybody know the French word?

Reply to zemuron

What the hell????? They speak french in Canada?? Since when??

Poobaa, u ever tried to eat one? Reminds me of something cruel I did yesterday. I was playing around w/ an 18V battery pack I made for a motor, and that thing gets realllly hot when it shorts and it even melted my copper wires a few times (and burned my friend numerous times....he holds the pack, not me hehehehehe). Anyway, we noticed this living thing outside, so after staring at each other for a minute laughing cruelly like dr. evil, we went outside and fried it. Heheheh.

How do the possums get fried if they arent grounded? Hmm. Anyways I had my athlon 700mhz slot plugged into a ups. A fax machine and other things were plugged in. My dad was expecting a fax and saw the machine was off. He noticed the ups was tripped and turned it back on. BZAAAAAAAAAP the psu on the athon flashed and caught fire. A capacitor it seemed was actually flaming. No clue what happened, but it tripped the ups, and the comp still works

Where do you live Flame and how old are you? I'm 20 years old and I alwas went to a french school. I graduated from that school.

Reply to zemuron

Hehehe. A friend of mine at my school's computer club decided he'd build a comp from scratch. Fine, I let him. 1 hour later he comes to me and says ok, let's turn this thing on, and upon quick inspection I tell him don't u dare, but he does. Bang! Boom! The psu caught fire and then entire room was in smoke- the parts were totally fried. Hehehe.

Well, after reading all these posts, I have a few comments.

First, I'm kinda surprised it only took that much to trip your UPS. I have my OC'ed Athlon 2500+, 4HDDs, Radeon 9700 Pro, 17" CRT, 300W stereo + 300W subwoofer, black light, lava lamp, and four 100w bulbs all running off a single PLUG, and I've never shorted it. That's roughly 15-18 amps. How crappy is your heater?

Second, I have two of these UPSs. My plan was to daisy chain them and have double the backup protection for all my devices. After twice testing my configuration, I found I only had 6 seconds of backup power. So, I call up APC to find out what's up. Who would've thought these things don't have enough current output to do that? Stupid gay APC. I would've bought two more if they could do that, but instead of $120 for two 500w units, I gotta spend $250 for a 1000w unit. Gay, gay, gay. Next time the power goes out I'll just go for a drive in my 3,000-watt-soundsystem car.

Another thing is that French people in Canada don't speak french, they speak joyale (sp?). Think of a Louisiana drawl vs. British english. That's what joyale is compared to France french. In fact, people in France make fun of people from Quebec, just like everyone makes fun of people from down south US.

But I digress.

maybe you'll know of a possum as an opossum? I think ppl call it both things.

The heater could is probably at least 1500W, even a small one. There is no way any home computer is going to produce that much power draw.

I wonder if he still thinks I'm an idiot hehehe (the french thing in canada was sarcastic)

Reply to flamethrower205

LOL possums get shorted when the touch an active and something grounded.

And as for the heater... well on the back is written 2200W. which is ALOT of wattage!

And my 500VA APC UPS can keep my system up for over 2 minutes. I havnt timed it, but its only been down to 60% battery level.
