Anybody have experience with the Tascam DA-98 MIDI Time code function?
I've been trying desperately to get a client's DA-98 to sync with
Protools 6.9 for flying tracks back and forth and have had no luck at
all. I've yet to confirm that the DA-98 is actually output anything
from it's MIDI port. It seems I am not alone in this challenge, as I
spent an hour on the phone today with a tech support dude at Tascam and
his conclusion was that he couldn't get it to work on the machine in
his facility either!
I have to wait until Monday when he is supposed to get back to me after
discussing this with some guru acquaintence of his.
I have everything set correctly in Protools to have it chase the DA-98
using MMC from the MIDI Port connected to the DA-98. I have the tape
striped with Timecode, and the Yamaha 02R console in the studio reads
the SMPTE LTC from the DA-98.
Maybe the 02R can convert the SMPTE to MTC for me? Is this a
possibility? It's not a function in the manual.

I've only owned tdm hardware, so this applies only to that. Sorry if
it's no help to ya.
You say you have the Tascam tape already striped with TC. If your PT
hardware is an HD system, all you gotta do is to borrow or buy a Digi
Sync I/O box. And plug in the Tascam's TC into the TC input. I'd sync
PT with my 24 track machine this way.
Before Protools HD hardware, I had a Digi Smpte Slave Driver box that
worked fine with the previous PT hardware. Them SSD boxes go for actual
peanuts on ebay today.
I never dealt with any MIDI ports with PT, just TC ports. Always
worked. Just click on the Online button on the far left of the
transport, and PT will either slave to or output TC.
I (lucky for me) don't know about PT LE, but it should be all there in
your manual or the .pdf. PT does have a damn good manual imo.
If this is no help, go to Digi's website to the User Conferences in the
Support area. There is a TON of info there. It's hard to find a
question you may have that has not been answered there at some point.
Check it out.

David:
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, the Sync I/O is way out of
the budget, as was a TDM system. I know the SMPTE LTC works from the
DA-98, but have had no way to get something out of the MTC port. I
called Tascam on Friday and even their tech help guy couldn't get HIS
machine to do it! Now waiting for a call back from him on Monday after
he talks so someone else he swears is a DA-98 guru. We'll see...
Getting ready to break the news to the client that he needs to buy
another piece of gear. How about a MOTO AV MTP?
I got a very disconcerting response today from Tascam. It turns out
that even though there are ports for MIDI and MTC functions in the
menus, the MTC feature is NOT enabled in the DA-98, only the DA-98HR!
You can imagine my frustration after trying to get this to work for
hours and hours, making several 45 minute drives back and forth to the
client's house only to leave with my head hanging low and
unsuccessful...

You can always print a track of TC on one of your Tascam tracks. And
feed that to Protools.
Or, as someone else suggested, if the 98 can slave to -TC which I'd
guess it can do - print a track of TC in PT and output it to the 98.
Have PT be the master and the 98 slave to it.
And then ... if you are dumping digitally, sharing a clock source ...

Ease of time code syncing is one of the big differences between ProTools LE
and ProTools TDM.
For what you're trying to do, you'd be much better off using ProTools HD TDM
and a Sync I/O, as David suggested elsewhere. If you can't afford to buy
one, then I bet there's a ProTools TDM user near you who would give you an
hour or two of time at a reasonable rate in his or her studio. Sync the
tracks that way, then copy the session files out and bring them back into
your PTLE session.
Nice idea, but the studio owner who bought this stuff doesn't want to
pay someone else to do it when he has the gear to do it himself. A HD3
system is WAY overkill for a home studio and not needed for this task.
I'd decided to replace the MIDI I/O with a M-Audio Midisport 8x8/s
which reads SMPTE LTC. 8 in/out MIDI ports and SMPTE, and $200 less
than the DIGI MIDI I/O with NO SMPTE, because DIGI wants to sell you
the $1800 SYNC I/O. Once again, DIGI rakes you over the coals...

I chose the MOTU MTP-AV instead of the M-Audio unit because the
Midisport doesn't seem to recognize standard video SMPTE frame rates.
It offers drop- or non-drop-frame at 30 frames per second (which doesn't
make any sense to me, but maybe I'm missing something) but only one
version of 29.97 (and no mention of whether that version is drop or
non-drop). The MOTU offers frame rates that make sense to a knucklehead
like me.

OK, so I got the Midisport 8x8 and it does work! I've been getting
Protools to chase the DA-98, now it's a matter of getting it to do so
consistantly. Every few times you start a recording online, locked to
SMPTE, you get this error: "Missed the sync point due to time spent
allocating disk space. Please use a larger preroll or limit disk
allocation for better performance." It will come up a few times in a
row then it will mysteriously start working. I've played with the
preroll settings and tried to figure out the disk allocation
adjustment, but nothing sseems to fix the problem...
Ideas?
