I am looking for a 24-bit solid-state audio recorder with a digital
input. The signal comes from the A/D converter of a mic preamp, and I
would like to store it as a 24-bit WAV file using a silent recorder.
The price is not so important, but I would like not to have to pay for
too many features beyond mere audio recording.

Since he said 'solid state' I would guess he means no moving parts.
No tape, no disk, no cooling fan. Probably recording to CF or SD cards.

The Edirol R1`would be a great choice....it's also completely portable
(ie. no need for a USB or firewire bus)...Good luck!!

Hi Jonny,
yes I find the R1 to be a great recorder, but unfortunately it does not
have a digital input to be connected to the preamp digital out. For me
this is important because I want to avoid analog connections between
preamp and recorder.
By the way, by silent I meant no moving parts - which makes the R1
indeed an excellent choice if only it had a digital in.

The Sound Devices 722 will record 24-bit digital input at sampling rates up
to 192 ks/sec from either regular S/PDIF or AES/EBU, and certainly meets
your desire of not having "too many features beyond mere audio recording".
If you buy a big enough Compact Flash card for your needs, and turn off the
hard disk recording it has no parts moving during recording (but does use
the disk at power-on, though it is a good deal quieter than a DAT even
then).
However it is expensive, and includes many audio features not required by
your description.

Doug Oade of oade.com was going to offer R1's with a digi in mod as soon
as his health got better....you might check with him. Good luck!

The R1 has an internal hard drive. That has moving parts. Although we've come
a long way with making drives quieter, I'd want a demo in a quiet room to
determine if I could hear the "chunk, chunk, chunk" most HD recorders have
before I plunked down my money.

The Edirol R4 has an internal hard drive. The R1 is strictly flash
memory (which better not have any moving parts larger than electrons).

The R1 doesn't work with a plug-in CF-card hard drive? :-(

my bad.
But now that you mention it. Who is it up in NJ has an outboard box that
squirts 24/96 stereo via S/PDIF into a 1 GB chip in a PDA?

That would be Core Sound. Len's a little slow on the draw today. Maybe
he likes the hot weather and he's out running a marathon.
