Pc won't boot, black screen

I've been experiencing my pc locking up for some time now, and difficulty rebooting. The last time it happened, it locked up and there were colored spots all over the screen. I tried to reboot, and I get a black screen. The hard drive activity light comes on for a few seconds, and then goes out. The screen stays black and the pc is frozen. Strike a bell with anyone?
