Hello,

I'm contemplating turning my PC into a home recording station for
the first time and would appreciate any advice. My computer specs
are adequate and I have a decent condenser mic. What I'm chiefly
interested in is being able to record good quality acoustic demos
(I'm a songwriter). Acoustic guitars, vocals with harmony, maybe
the odd bit of sweetening and percussion. I'd really like to be
able to use at least two microphones simultaneously. I want quiet
inputting, pro-sounding reverb and user-friendliness overall. I'm
no engineer and never will be.

So I require, as well as software, some kind of A-D interface
with good preamps. I also don't want to spend a fortune! I'm
currently looking at two units, both well under $500 and both
using Cubase software. They are:

ProSonus Firebox
http://www.zzounds.com/item--PRSFIREBOX

Lexicon
http://www.zzounds.com/item--LEXOMEGA

I'm attracted to the Lexicon because it's cheaper and I like the
idea of a Lexicon reverb plug-in (though less than top-notch, I'm
sure) being part of the package.

Does anyone have experience with either unit? All comments
welcome.

Lexicon Omega:
USB 1.1, 48kHz sampling, four channels i/o total (ie 2 in + 2 out or 4 in +
0 out)

Presonus Firebox:
Firewire 400, 6 channels 24/96 in + 10 channels 24/96 out simultaneous

No contest.

The lexicon stuff is a division of Harmon internation which owns
digitech and up to this point the DAW recording products they've made
have been considered trash.

Lexicon has never really caught on in this corner of the business. The
Omega might be all right, but they sure didn't win any popularity
contests with their previous computer recording products. It'l be hard
to find much in the way of a consesus on the Omega. I don't have one
and I don't know anyone who does.

Presonus has done pretty well in this area and their products are
generally a good buy and aren't a pain to get working. That's really
important since you're a beginner at this. Much better to have it work
out of the box so you can start learning how to record instead of
learning how to troubleshoot computer interfacing problems.

Hi,

I own several pieces of PreSonus gear and I'm happy and generally impressed
with them all. I don't have a Firebox but based on what I know about their
other products and their fine tech support I think you'll be very happy with
it. And like another poster mentioned, the Firefox has a much bigger bang
for your buck.

Best of luck!

Hi,
I use MOTU 8X8. thats 8 in 8 out at 96/24. thats probably standard. If you record guitar with a vocal guide and you need a click... thats two condensers for the guitar, one for the vocal and monitors back(probably in stereo) and the click back on a separate channel, so you can control the volume of the click, and then there's the mix...that's about six. Make sure you get digital outs for the reverbs... :D

Oh yea prosonus makes a great headphone pre... :D
