My father has a laptop with a pentium 4 3 ghz processor that is slower than most pentium 3's. I am not much of a laptop guy. There are 68 processes running when it is idle. He has sent it off and no improvements.

It has 512MB ram, ATI mobility radeon 9000/9100 gpu. Does anyone know where there is some shareware for diagnostics or anything that may assist us in a remedy for this situation.

Thank you in advance.

What type of work does your dad do on the laptop ?

I use spybot and adaware to scan for junk on my computer and there are a few others out there than specifically take a look at your registry and your browsers to see if you have been hijacked with something.

YOu do seem to have a fairly high number of processes going
try under the run comman type "msconfig" and under start up unclick all the things tyhat you do not use, if you are not sure what the proccess is then google it, thats what i do, im not a master computer tech but i have been using the same comp for like 5 years and i maintain it and my moms and they all run smooth.

If all else fails then formatting the hardrive and re-installing is a last ditch attempt, but make sure you format your drive before installing again. I also recommend staying away from internet explorer, get them to use opera or firefox if you can.

good luck dude,

I would say the 512 Mb of RAM and more than likely 4,200 rpm hard drive are what is doing it in. How close is the hard drive to being full? Have you tried running a Diskeeper defrag on the machine?

Check the Start up programs and make sure you don't have bloat you don't want starting with your system that can rob a ton of performace from you.
