ok im looking to buy a laptop and i wnat one that i can upgrade but i dont know anything bout laptops, how do i tell if i can upgrade the graphic cards on them? im pretty sure its possible well any help will be appreciated thanks in advance

You dont usually "upgrade" a laptop... most things like vid cards or processers are designed especially for that laptop... like trying to put ford parts on a VW... it may work but not very well... I dont suggest it.

Also, new laptop parts are often more expensive than the desktop parts... so all in all its best buying a good laptop and forget about upgrading it.

You are looking for an "MXM" type laptop. These have an actual slot loaded video card you can indeed upgrade. Switching between the manufacturers (ATI to nVidia) is a sketchy thing, and usually doesn't work well, but here is a web page dedicated to MXm upgradable video cards.

The owner/operator of the site was here on Tom's for a while, but I think that Anandtech is his first home. I don't know of many upgradable (GPU) notebooks out there, but the Executioner is one. It has a 7900 GTX 512 MB, and you can upgrade it.
